Last fall, the SGRC conducted a full-day planning session to renew our mandate and strategic approach to playing a meaningful role in the discussions around affordability and supply. By the very nature of the work we do, we have unique insight into the day-to-day workings of the real estate market, and an intimate relationship with those most impacted by market volatility—the buyers and sellers. It was crucial to bring this unique perspective into the mix and leverage our strengths to advocate on behalf of consumers.
Our renewed mandate is articulated by our mission to be “the Fraser Valley Board’s authoritative voice on housing issues, providing guidance and intelligence to enhance the reputation of FVREB, strengthen the influence of the profession and advance the public good.” The accompanying strategic framework is built on four pillars – Thought Leadership, Advocacy, Education, and Engagement – each of which contains a series of priority initiatives. We will identify and proactively advocate for areas that we believe need to be addressed and look to support sound housing policy in terms of intelligence, data, expertise, and outreach. For example, streamlining the red tape processes around zoning and permitting, or providing insight into the rental market dynamics.
The growth predicted for the entire Lower Mainland will not come without its challenges if we are to provide sufficient housing to meet future needs. The SGRC is committed to working alongside our industry and municipal and provincial partners to help build the vibrant, thriving communities our constituents deserve.
